Hazelhurst Community Gallery Exhibitions

Calligraphy Southscribes
23 January to 3 February

"Calligraphy is far more than just beautiful writing. It is an art form in itself," so say the calligraphers participating in this exhibition. Works will show contemporary and tradition applications of the craft all original pieces celebrating the skills of the group.

Hazelhurst Teachers Show
6 February to 16 February

Experience the diverse and professional approach to varied media of the teaching staff at Hazelhurst. This exhibition is a display of their skills that are the foundation of Hazelhurst's Art Centre programs.

Impressions in Miniature – Otto Kuster, Remy Lorken and Jim Flood
20 February to 2 March

Known as the Palette Knife Painters of the Sutherland Shire these artists show a collection of impressionist paintings created with a palette knife. Paintings will depict images of Australiana including local Shire scenes.

Illuminated landscape – Peter Solness
6 March to 16 March

An exhibition of high resolution photographs printed on fine art ink jet paper. Most of the images were taken in the Royal National Park at night utilising a revolutionary technique. The works portray the mystery, beauty and natural splendour of the Royal National Park in a 'new light'.

Creative Mythology – Darren Fernandez
20 March to 30 March

Mythology is the language of this set of works that explore the darker side of ideals and identity. Using illustration and 'designed drawing technique' the works combine Australian sources with Japanese manga comic and American super hero mythology.

Continuum Showcase
3 April to 13 April

This is an exhibition of paintings by Continuum members designed to 'showcase' their talents and skills to the community. The works can range from pastel, oils and acrylics with subjects such as landscape, portraits, botanical illustration and abstraction.

Land and People – Christine Harrison
17 April to 27 April

In this exhibition the artist presents a visual reflection of Australia's diversity of land and people. This diversity is presented as a visual expression of the beauty of our similarities as humans and also our beauty in differences.

Common Ground – The Gnarra Artists Group
1 May to 11 May

The Gnarra Artists Group meets weekly to paint and make artwork about their lives and culture. These Aboriginal Elder Women want to develop a wider understanding of contemporary Aboriginal culture and the Gweagal people.


Bird on a Wire - Hazelhurst Mosaic Students Show
15 May to 25 May

Hazelhurst Mosaic students present an exhibition showing recent works made during their classes. They aim to show the community the wonderful world of mosaics and its versatility as an art form.


Change the Climate of Your Mind – Andrew Netherwood
29 May to 8 June

Andrew states his motivation for this exhibition as follows, "As a trained scientist and partner of a scientist whose work includes climate change research in Antarctica, I have watched the progress of both science itself and the perception of the issue with increasing exasperation. Hopefully some of the images will prick some unconsidered or undecided consciences to internal reflection and action."


The Interchange – Kevin McKay
12 June to 22 June

Local artist Kevin McKay presents an exhibition of paintings that feature as subject matter the freeway overpass and the urban high-rise. These features of the urban landscape present as landmarks in the daily commute and provide a means of interchange with and between spaces.


NAIDOC Week – Mervyn Bishop Photographs
26 June to 6 July

Mervyn Bishop is well known for his photographs that have become icons of Australian photography. Born in Brewarrina in 1945 Bishop is the first Aboriginal professional photographer. He was awarded Press Photographer of the Year in 1971 and has worked for Indigenous and Non- Indigenous organisations documenting the large and small events in many communities across the country.

Fired Up – Porcelain Artists Group
10 July to 20 July

Sydney Southern Districts Association of Porcelain Artists present and exhibition of new concepts and innovative design on kiln fired porcelain. In addition to the painted porcelain the works on display will incorporate other mediums such as silk, glass and paper.

Insanity Streak: Ten Years in Comics – Tony Lopes
24 July to 3 August

Tony Lopes will present an exhibition of his comic work marking the tenth anniversary of his Insanity Streak comic strip. Published world wide this local comic artist would like to share his hand drawn humour with the community.


Friends of Hazelhurst
7 August to 17 August

The Friends of Hazelhurst display artworks made by their members. The Friends work hard all year raising funds for Hazelhurst and they take this opportunity to exhibit their creative pursuits.
