Sutherland to Cronulla Off-Road Cycleway Route Study

Sutherland Bike TrailCouncil actively supports cycling and walking activity through its infrastructure programs and information sources.

Cycling guides

Sutherland Shire Council is creating a series of cycling guides which will cover different areas of the Shire.

The routes recommended in these guides are mostly shared off-road cycle/pedestrian routes that link to major shopping centres, schools, recreational facilities, services and railway stations.

Whether you choose to use the cycle routes outlined to commute to work or school, access the area's shops or for recreation, the variations in terrain makes it suitable for a range of fitness levels and riding experiences.

Note: to make the file size small enough for downloading for those using slower internet connections, a smaller file size version has been provided for some brochures, but the quality of the cycleway cross-sections graphics is very poor on that version. To obtain a printed copy, please contact council.

The Sutherland to Cronulla Off-Road Cycleway Route Study

In 2006 an opportunity to develop an east-west cycleway link between Sutherland and Cronulla was realised through the Sutherland to Cronulla Rail Duplication.  At this time both Council and the community expressed to the NSW state government the need and support for the construction of a shared cycleway/pedestrian path along the rail corridor between Sutherland and Cronulla.

In response GTA consultants were engaged by the RTA and Sutherland Shire Council (funded by the NSW state government) to investigate route options and assess which route best provides connectivity to employment, education and recreation facilities; is safe, accessible and direct; links with regional routes and meets community expectations.

The Sutherland to Cronulla Off-Road Cycleway Route Study identifies a number of alternative off-road route options  - ie the Rail Corridor, The Kingsway, President Avenue and Forest Road.  Of these four options, the Rail Corridor option best satisfied the key objectives and drew the greatest community consultation and stakeholder support. Following the release of the study report in 2010, Council is formally seeking NSW Government commitment to construct a shared cycleway path along the Rail Corridor between Sutherland and Cronulla
